Clovis women finish first, Crush men 10th at season-opening Fresno Invitational
FRESNO – The start of the 2022 Clovis Community College cross country season was delayed by a few weeks after the cancellation of the Tour de Cuesta in San Luis Obispo on August 26.
But for the Crush women, it was worth the wait.
Competing at its home course at Woodward Park, Clovis' five scoring runners finished among the competition's top-11 to total an amazing score of 39 points and easily capture the women's team championship.
Sophomore Evelyn Zambrano paced the Crush, finishing the 3.1-mile course with a time of 19:56.1 to finish in fifth place overall. She was followed by sophomore Walker Douglas in seventh place (20:10.3), freshman Julia Martinez in ninth place (20:18.9), sophomore Jennifer Recinos in 11th (20:35.2), and freshman Gabriella Avila in 12th place (20:46.9).
Also for the Clovis women, freshman Juliette Mata finished in 14th place (21:14.5) and sophomore Megan Duran took 23rd (21:57.0).
Bakersfield finished second in the final team standings with 79 points with College of the Sequoias third with a score of 116 points. Ailene Rios from Long Beach City College was the individual winner with her time of 19:36.7.
The Clovis men totaled 145 points to finish in sixth place in the final results.
Freshman Aron Teffra led the Crush with his 20th-place showing, clearing the four-mile course with his time of 22:25.5.
Freshmen Marcus Jauregui (22:48.0) and Miguel Marin (22:49.4) weren't far behind in 29th and 30th place, respectively. They were followed by freshman Dominic Bien in 33rd (22:56.1), freshman Sebastian McGehee in 38th (23:03.9), freshman Jordan Barajas in 44th (23:28.2), and freshman Isaiah Tapia in 50th (23:46.8).
Also for the Clovis men, freshman Quincy Patton took 63rd (24:26.1) and freshman Anthony Hernandez was 102nd (27:04.0).
American River College won the men's team title with 53 points, followed by Bakersfield (67), and Orange Coast College (123). American River's Cristian Martinez captured the men's race with a time of 20:58.1.
Up next for the Crush, both the men's and women's team will be in action On Sep. 23 at the George Brooks Memorial Invitational at Hidden Valley Park in Martinez.
