Clovis women first, men second at George Brooks Memorial Invitational
PLEASANT HILL – The Clovis Community College women's cross country team won its second event of the season while the Crush men finished in second place at the George Brooks Memorial Invitational at Hidden Valley Park in Pleasant Hill on Friday. The event was hosted by Diablo Valley College.
All five scoring Clovis women runners finished among the competition's top-10 to compile an impressive team score of 21 points. The Crush easily outdistanced second-place De Anza College at 69 points, followed by Sierra College in third with 84 points.
Sophomore Evelyn Zambrano led the way with her second-place showing. She cleared the three-mile course with a time of 12:12.3. Right behind her in third was sophomore Walker Douglas with her time of 19:13.8.
Freshman Julia Martinez was fifth at 19:56.7, freshman Julietta Mata took seventh with 20:04.7, and sophomore Megan Duran closed out the scoring team in ninth place at 20:11.7.
Other finishes for the Clovis women included sophomore Jennifer Recinos in 11th (20:25.2), freshman Gabriella Avila in 16th (21:00.1), and freshman Linda Padilla Gonzalez in 45th (28:38.6).
On the men's side, Clovis' five scoring runners finished among the top-20. The Crush totaled 63 points to finish in second just behind first-place De Anza College with 60 points. Chabot was third with 69 points in a tightly-contested top-three.
Freshman Sebastian McGehee (left) led Clovis with his fifth-place finish. He cleared the four-mile course with his time of 23:05.0. Freshmen Dominic Bien (23:11.7) and Miguel Marin (23:16.0) finished in 11th and 12th place respectively while freshmen Aron Teffra (23:52.8) and Marcus Jaregui (23:55.3) were back-to-back in 17th and 18th.
Other results for the men included freshman Jordan Barajas in 24th (24:34.1), freshman Quincy Patton in 40th (25:54.6), and freshman Anthony Hernandez in 62nd (32:16.7).
Up next for the Crush, the men and women will return to action next Friday (Sep. 30) at the Pacific Invitational, hosted by the University of the Pacific. The event is set to take place at the Micke Grove Golf Course in Lodi and gets underway at 5:30 p.m.
