Welch leads Crush swimmers at Cuesta Invitational
Freshman Justin Welch had an impressive debut over the weekend (Mar. 11-12) for the Clovis Community College swimming & diving team. At the Cuesta Invitational in San Luis Obispo, Welch earned four first-place finishes and set school records in five events.
Welch shattered Clovis records with first-place times in the 200 backstroke (1:52.67, previous record 2:09.99), 100 backstroke (51.42, previous school record 57.97), 100 butterfly (51.05, previous school record 53.05), and 100 IM (53.40, previous school record 57.15)
Also in the 200 free relay, Welch led off the event with a 22.09 to set a new record in the 50 free (previous school record 22.30).
Numerous Crush swimmers also improved on personal-best times at the meet.
Gordon Young improved in all five events (100 free, 50 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 50 backstroke, 50 freestyle) while scoring seven points in the 50 backstroke.
Gabriel Santanton improved in five events as well (100 free, 200 breaststroke, 200 IM, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke). He earned the Crush one point in the 200 breaststroke.
And Jesus Lopez improved his time in the 100 IM.
With just four swimmers competing at the meet, the Clovis men totaled 87 points to finish in 14th place out of 20 teams.
For the Crush women, Sonja Hanson was the lone competitor at the meet. She improved in the 50 breaststroke, 100 IM, and 100 breaststroke.
Up next for the Crush is a dual meet at Shasta College on Friday, March 18. The event is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
