MONTEREY PARK – Clovis Community College freshman swimmer Justin Welch wrapped up an amazing first season with the Crush by earning All-American honors with top-10 finishes in three events at the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Championships. The three-day event at East Los Angeles College concluded on Saturday.
Welch, originally out of Buchanan High School, improved on his own school-record times at the state meet.
His best finish came in the 100-yard backstroke as he swam 51.06 for third place overall. Welch's previous record was 52.25 from last week's Central Valley Conference Championships.
Welch added a fourth-place showing in the 200 back with his time of 1:49.72 that beat out his previous time of 1:53.05 at the conference meet. He closed out the weekend by taking sixth in the 100 fly, clocking in at 50.95 to beat his old record of 51.85 from the conference finals.
Welch totaled 44 team points all on his own at the meet to give the Crush a 23rd-place team finish in the final State Championship men's standings.
