Former Crush standout Marcus Jauregui named to 3C2A Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll
Former Clovis Community College cross country and track standout Marcus Jauregui was named to the 2023-24 3C2A Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll. The selections were announced by the 3C2A on Tuesday.
The Scholar-Athlete Award is the highest student achievement honor awarded annually by the 3C2A. The honorees are selected by the 3C2A Awards Committee from nominations made by community colleges throughout California. Jauregui is one of just 18 student-athletes in the state chosen for this year's honor roll.
Candidates for the Scholar-Athlete Award must carry a minimum grade point average of 3.5 and also show outstanding leadership as an athlete, student, or in other college and community activities, as well as have participated in two seasons of sport at a California community college.
Jauregui earned a 3.72 grade point average during his time at CCC and was just as impressive on the course and track for the Crush.
"Marcus was a tremendous student-athlete that worked hard and pushed through adversity," said Clovis Head Coach CJ Albertson. "He was a conference champion in track and field and all-region in the 800 meters. Through his accomplishments, he earned the title of 2023 Central Valley Conference Track Athlete of the Year and was our college's Kiwanis Torch of Excellence Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
"Marcus was also a great teammate that consistently put effort into bettering himself and being there for the team."
Director of Athletics James Sewell also praised the efforts of Jauregui as well as the support staff that helped him reach his potential.
"Marcus was a model student-athlete during his time here at Clovis and we are excited and proud that he has received this well-deserved honor from the 3C2A," said Sewell. "We know that this will serve as inspiration for all the aspiring Crush student-athletes that come after him.
"This is also a reflection of our outstanding support services here at Clovis Community College, and in particular the work of Academic Counselor for Athletics Karie Hannigan and Assistant Coach Gracielita Bastidas."
Hannigan, who helped guide Jauregui academically, echoed the sentiments of Sewell.
"Marcus was the ideal student-athlete," she said. "He made balancing a rigorous course load including honors classes while participating in athletics year-round look easy. He worked with purpose and diligence to complete his goals and earn three associate's degrees in two years. I am honored to have worked with Marcus during his time at CCC and proud to see him earning 3C2A's Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll recognition."
Following his two-year Clovis career, Jauregui transferred to nearby California State University, Fresno and competed for the Fresno State men's cross country team this past fall and is currently a member of the track & field team.
He, along with the other Scholar-Athlete Award honorees, will be celebrated during the 3C2A Scholar-Athlete Luncheon on March 26. The luncheon will be a highlight at the annual 3C2A Convention scheduled for March 25-28 at the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Sacramento.
