The opening home match of the season found the Crush women's soccer team twice coming from behind to ultimately take the lead late in the match, winning 4-3 against Santa Rosa Junior College.
Freshman forward Ariana Quintero opened the scoring in the 11th minute, stealing the ball from the defender, going to goal all alone, and calmly finishing to the near post. Santa Rosa would score two later in the half, but Quintero would tie the game at 2-2 with a penalty kick in the 32nd minute. The goals would keep coming in the first half, though unfortunately it was Santa Rosa who went up 3-2 right before half.
The Crush came out in the second half with a renewed energy and tied the match in the 60th minute through another penalty, this time taken by freshman forward Brooke Gill. They kept the pressure on Santa Rosa through the rest of the half and were rewarded in the 88th minute with a goal from distance by sophomore midfielder Mia Castillo.
The Crush start the season with a win for the first time in program history, which was made even sweeter that Santa Rosa was the team that eliminated them from the playoffs last season.
Next up for the women's soccer team is their first road trip of the season to the Ventura College Showcase. They will play two matches over the weekend, Friday at 7pm vs East LA, and Saturday at 12pm vs Citrus. All games will be played at Ventura College.
The next home match for the Crush is Tuesday, September 4th at 2:30pm vs CCCAA State Semifinalist Folsom Lake. Go Crush!
