Freshman Jordyne Puentes came through in the clutch when the Clovis Community College women's soccer team needed it most. With time winding down in the second half, Puentes nailed a penalty kick goal for the game-winner to give the Crush a narrow 2-1 win at Hartnell College in both teams' season opener on Monday.
Clovis totaled just seven shots on goal but made the most of its opportunities.
Sophomore Karyme Hernandez earned Clovis' first goal of the season, scoring in the 32nd minute off the assist from sophomore Alexz Wheaton.
The Crush appeared to be on their way to a 1-0 lead at halftime but Hartnell's Yvette Rojas scored just moments before the 45-minute whistle to tie up the contest at the break.
The two teams battle to a nearly scoreless second half until Puentes converted her kick in the 89th minute of play.
Sophomore Angie Petrakis played well to help lead the Crush to the victory. She totaled right saves while allowing the one goal.
The Crush will look to continue their winning ways when they return to action this weekend (Sep. 3-4) at the Ventura College New Balance Showcase. On Friday, Clovis faces West Valley College at 3:15 p.m. and takes on Rio Hondo College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
