Crush bring home 4 gold medals from NorCal Finals, qualify 5 for State Championships
SACRAMENTO – Led by a pair of first-place finishes by sophomore Julia Martinez, the Clovis Community College women's track & field team totaled 61 points to end tied for fourth place at the 2024 Northern California Regional Championships. The two-day event hosted by American River College concluded on Saturday.
Martinez was a winner in the 1,500 meters as well as the 5,000 with times of 4:57.84 and 18:19.50, respectively.
Freshman Genevieve Tamondong took first place in the 800 meters, running 2:21.28. And freshman Rhiannon Walker captured the 3,000 meters steeplechase with her time of 11:23.32. Walker also added a runner up finish in the 5,000 at 18:25.67.
Freshman Lisbeth Mendez contributed a pair of top-5 finishes, taking second in the 10,000 meters (41:22.08) and fifth in the 5,000 (19:24.07.
On the men's side, Clovis scored 15 points for 17th place at the Northern California Regional Championships. Quincy Patton had the Crush's best finish by taking third in the 400 meters with his time of 48.89.
Aron Teffra had a pair of sixth-place showings in 800 meters (1:57.98) and 1,500 (4:04.83) while Guillermo Lopez was eighth in the 1,500 (4:05.38) and 5,000 (15:42.69). And Joaquin McGee added an eighth place showing in the 10,000 meters with his time of 34:04.64.
The Crush will next compete at the season-ending 3C2A State Championships. The two-day event is set for May 17-18 at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo.
Clovis will send five individuals to compete in a total of seven events.
For the women, Martinez has qualified for the 1,500 and 5,000 meters. Walker will also see action in two events, competing in the steeplechase and 5,000. Tamondong will compete in the 800 while Mendez is set to go in the 10,000.
Patton will be the lone men's competitor for Clovis as he has qualified in the 400.
