Clovis’ Gracielita Bastidas named 5CTCA State Assistant Coach of the Year
Gracielita Bastidas of the Clovis Community College cross country and track & field programs, was recently named the Women's Cross Country State Assistant Coach of the Year by the 5CTCA (California Community College Cross Country & Track Coaches Association).
Bastidas has been a key component of the cross country program's continued success since joining the Crush in 2021. Clovis head coach CJ Albertson felt the recognition was well-deserved.
"Gracielita brings a joyful energy and positive personality that wakes us all up during her morning practices," said Albertson. "Her compassion and care enable her to connect with student-athletes one-on-one and help them stay mentally and emotionally healthy. Through leading mental skills practices, encouraging team activities, and gently pushing student-athletes to be their best (or yelling very loudly in her signature tone), Gracielita has become a critical reason for the team's success.
"Results speak for themselves as the last four years since she joined, our women's team has placed second at Regionals (2021) and are now three-time NorCal Champions (2022-24). In addition, we've placed in the top four at state in each year of her tenure, including podium finishes in 2023 (3rd) and 2024 (2nd)."
Bastidas helped coach Crush sophomore Rhiannon Walker to a first-place individual finish at last month's 3C2A State Championships. Walker is appreciative of Bastidas' support on and off the trails and track.
"Coach Gracielita is the type of coach that cares about every part of how her student-athletes are doing," said Walker. "She loves to see us excel in running, but not at the expense of our mental or emotional health. She sets a great example by practicing with us, pacing our workouts, and using the mental strategies that she teaches us in practice. She is the biggest supporter of our team and one of the best coaches I've ever had."
Bastidas is a Fresno native and graduate of Rosevelt High School. She went on to compete at Fresno Pacific University and was a four-year member of the track and cross country teams.
